Space Race
The space race was the competition between nations regarding achievements in the fields of space exploration. The first goal of space race was to see who can launch the first artificial satellite into space. The country to succeed at this first was the Soviet Union with their satellite Sputnik. The United States reaction was that they feared that the Soviet Union could launch an attack on the United States anytime because they had a satellite.
National Aeronauts and Space Administration other wise known as NASA was established in 1958. The purpose of NASA is to explore the universe and search for life. The United States first successfully launched a satellite to orbit the Earth on January 31, 1958. The name of this satellite was Explorer 1.
The first human in space was Yuri Gagarin on April 12, 1961. The first American in space was Alan B. Shepard on May 5, 1961. The first American to orbit Earth wasJohn Glenn on February 20, 1962. Valentina Tereshkova was the first women in space on June 6, 1963.
In May 1961 President John F. Kennedy declared “The United States would put a man on the moon before the end of the decade. NASA’s Apollo 11 mission was the mission to land on the moon. Apollo 11 was the shuttle to land on the moon. On July 20, 1969, at 10:18 p.m., Americans Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were the first people to step on the moon.
