Berlin Wall
At the end of World War II, the allies met at the Potsdam Conference and split Germany into two parts, East Germany and West Germany. The allies also split Germany’s capital Berlin into East Berlin and West Berlin. East Berlin and East Germany both had a communist economic system. West Berlin and West Germany both had a democratic economic system. Britain, France and the United States controlled West Germany. The Soviet Union controlled East Germany.
By the late 1950s, citizens in East Germany were fleeing to West Germany. East Germany had lost 3.5 million people to West Germany by 1961. On the night of August 12-13, 1961 East Germans built the Berlin Wall. The Berlin Wall stretched one hundred miles. It originally was barbed wire fence with concrete post. The final constriction of the Berlin Wall had twelve foot high, four foot thick concrete slab with a smooth pipe at the top. The U.S.S.R. constructed the Berlin Wall. East Germans tried to escape by trying to scale the wall. The East Germans also tried flinging a rope over the wall. The Berlin Wall finely fell because it began to mingle.
