The United States fought the Soviet Union in the Cold War. The Cold War started in the 1940s and went to the 1960s. The Soviet Union and the United States relationship began to unravel because the two had opposite goals. Great Britain, United States and the Soviet Union met at Yalta and agreed to divide Germany into four occupied zones. United States, Soviet Union, Britain, and France met at Potsdam and is where they split Germany.
There were three postwar goals for the United States. The first goal was to encourage democracy in other countries and stop the spread of communism. The second goal was to rebuild European government. The final goal was to reunite Germany, stabilize it and increase European security.
